Poetry Video Contest

Poetry Video Contest is Now Closed

Poetry can be more than just words. It can be visual and emotional. It can tell a story or create an image. If you feel you create this type of poetry and want to put it to motion, this contest may be for you.

NMSPS introduces a new contest focused on poetry videos. These can be as  simple as a video of the poet reading their poem, but we certainly invite you to become more creative with the portrayal of your poem. Maybe you want to include animation or actors to convey your poem. Or maybe you want to create a slide show of images. The inclusion of music and/or background noise is also encouraged, but please be sure it does not take away from the performance or expression of the poem.

Examples of what we are looking for:

A video of a performance poem which uses images to help bring the poem to life

A short video of Billy Collin’s poem “Forgetfulness” to help give guidance and inspiration

▶  The classic “We Real Cool” set to animation

A slideshow video poem dedicated to New Mexico

Submission Guidelines

🔷  Videos can be recorded on cellphones, created through online programs, or created using more traditional types of video recording.

🔷  All submission must be in MP4, MOV, MPEG4, AVI, or WMV in order to be considered.

🔷  The video must contain original poetry ONLY. We want to see a video of YOUR poem, not your interpretation of someone else’s.

🔷 We are requesting unpublished work. No previously published work, regardless of form.

🔷  Videos should be no longer than FOUR minutes long.

🔷  Submit no more than THREE videos.

🔷  All audio, music, audio sampling, and conversation must be the sole property/copyright of the poet submitting the entry (or in the public domain).

🔷  Although the prize will go to the submitter of the video, please credit everyone who helped create the video as needed: poet, voice over, video editor, animator, etc. Videos can include closing credits which reflect the information. If the author is the sole creator, that must also be stated in the submission.

Submission Period

🔷  December 6, 2021 to April 3, 2022

Submission Fee

🔷  $5.00 for NMSPS Members

🔷  $10.00 for non-Members

Judging

🔷  Videos will be judged by volunteer members of the NMSPS

🔷  Judges will consider both the writing as well as the presentation of the poem.

Winners

🔷 The winner will be announced April 16, 2022, and will receive $50, publication of the video on the NMSPS website and other social media, and a “grab bag” of various poetry books and paraphernalia, as well as be presented at the annual NMSPS convention

🔷 Honorable mentions may also be virtually published on an individual basis

Note:

Entry into the contest indicates that you are granting permission for your poem and video to be shared via our social media channels, with proper accreditation.  The entry remains the sole property of the poet.
